HAVE A BREAK
This was an image I'd been trying to get off the ground for years.
I photographed the Kit Kat and cup of tea on a 5x4 plate camera.
The Kit Kat was a model I got made. The actual logo I recreated in a desktop program and got printed which I then wrapped round the model. The retro look was deliberate as the logo is so iconic, going back to the 1930's. The problem arose in trying to create the window into the outside.
I wanted a surreal look to the image but various attempts failed. It was only when I did a close up of the window in a separate shot and colour matched and graded the window and landscape to the Kit Kat lighting did the shot come together.
The photograph of the landscape is a licenced stock photograph which I then amended to match my idea. Slight and I mean slight A1 was used to extend the landscape. A1 is very useful but only in very small and I mean very small doses. It's not a substitute for using real images but it certainly fixes unexpected problems.
The steam rising of the cup I painted as I deemed the A1 attempt no good. That surprised me as i thought A1 would be ideal for the steam.
Like all my shots this image is designed to be printed big, up to A0.
Between starting the shoot and getting it right, two years. A surprisingly problematic shot from a simple idea
